Origins

Gallstones, which form in the gallbladder of cattle, have been a prized commodity in Asian alternate medicine for centuries. In ancient China, Persia and Greece, they were spruiked as herbal remedies and universal cures for poison. In Europe, they were often used for jewelry and charms until around the 17th century.
